Bournemouth Athletics Club
Bournemouth Athletics Club is based in Bournemouth, Dorset. Formed in 1906 it has remained a prominent sporting club in the town and currently has 270 members. The club welcomes people of all ages and abilities and offers training and competition at all levels in all athletics disciplines including Special Olympics.
The club promotes equal opportunities and sports equity and recently was awarded Clubmark status in recognition of its contribution to the local community. The aim of the Club is to promote the pursuit of athletic competition in Track & Field, Cross Country, Road Running and Race Walking; to provide excellence in both coaching and facilities for its members and to enable them to reach their athletic potential within competitive structures, at all standards and age groups.
The Cash 4 Clubs sports grant of £250 was awarded to the club to enable them to start a Women's Running Network by helping cover the costs of coaching qualifications and start up expenses for the group such as hi-vis jackets for dark evenings. This will offer parents who come to watch their children the opportunity to participate in sport and physical activity, improving their lifestyle and becoming good role models for their children to sustain their involvement in sport.
Tony Jones-Pert, a coach at the club and who has been planning this Women's Running Network project for some months was really pleased to see it come to fruition. "This is a modest donation but one which could have a massive impact. The numbers doubled for the second week and more of their friends have said they will be joining them in the coming weeks. I see this enhancing the club's role in the community as well as improving the well being of the women involved"
