Southampton Canoe Club
Formed in 1989 by a small number of kayak paddlers, Southampton Canoe Club now has nearly 100 members. Based at the University, they offer year round training and competition to adults and children in the area.
In 2007 they received the British Canoe Union's top award in recognition of the clubs efforts in working with young people, promoting canoeing and putting in place high standards of safety, coaching and management. Their community support is outstanding having involved themselves in projects including:
• Return to Sport, offering training to people over 18 years of age allowing them to try a new sport
• Training two PWLD (People with Learning Disabilities) for the Special Olympics
• PESSCL which develops links with local schools helping coaching children in the sport outside of the PE curriculum
With low fees to ensure accessibility to the local community, the club needs external funding to continue development. The £1,000 sports grant they were awarded went towards purchasing junior paddles and safety equipment, helping them to continue keeping canoeing affordable.
