Portslade Cricket Club
Portslade Cricket Club in Hove, East Sussex, was formed in 1876 and has remained in the local area providing cricket for both seniors and juniors with teams from Under 10 year olds up to Under 16s in the colts together with 3 senior Saturday teams and a Sunday team.
The junior section has in the last 3-4 years seen an increase in the number of colts wishing to take up the game to the extent that the colts section has now well over 120 in number.
The Cricket Club has been the unfortunate victim of three break ins and two further attempted break ins over the past 3 months resulting in the loss of equipment and stock and considerable damage to the club house and pavilion. Nevertheless, this has not deterred the club and they have continued to provide cricket for the local community.
The award of £1,000 from Cash 4 Clubs has come at an opportune time and has enabled the club to install a security system together with allowing them to send a member of the coaching staff to gain his level two cricket coaching award. The remainder of the award has been used to purchase a number of badly needed good quality cricket balls for the junior cricket festivals that are taking place during July and August.
Portslade Cricket Club were lucky enough to have their sports grant cheque presented to them by England star Matt Prior who came to visit club.
Commenting on the sports grants initiative, Matt Prior said: "Grassroots clubs like Portslade Cricket Club are the future of English cricket. I wouldn't be where I am today without the opportunities I had through my local club when I was younger. The importance of investing in the development of youngsters is essential to the future of the game."
