Hampshire Hurricanes

The Hampshire Hurricanes Rugby Club is the first of its kind in the South of England. Based at Eastleigh RFC, the club was set up in September 2008 for young adults with learning difficulties and slight physical disabilities.

The club trains and competes in touch rugby with training taking place every Sunday. Members can enjoy playing sport in a fun environment, where they can work as part of a team and improve their physical fitness. As well as the physical side, the club aims to help members build their self esteem and learn new social skills.

When training started in September, the club were missing one major element - a uniform! The club applied to Cash 4 Clubs to get the £1,000 sport grant needed to provide the team with t-shirts, rugby shirts, and jackets, giving the club a real identity and the Hurricanes' members a sense of belonging.

Matt Harvey, Chairman of the club has said: "The number one thing is the enjoyment factor, as well as the physical side of getting out and having good fun and doing exercise. We also try and build up self confidence and self esteem, while giving them a chance to learn some social skills."
