Darley Abbey Cricket Club
The Darley Abbey Cricket Club has been running for 17 years and is based in the north of Derby city, Derbyshire. The club has a wide membership, covering junior and seniors and catering for both boys and girls. They currently have three teams in the Derbyshire County Cricket league and seven junior teams in the junior leagues.
The club works closely with local schools, providing coaching in local primary schools during the summer months along with organising a cup competition for them. This scheme has now been extended to the local secondary school. In addition, the club hosts the Derbyshire Disabled cricket team which is open to disabled players of all ages and abilities and plays competitively against other counties.
Darley Abbey Cricket Club's goals for the future are to focus on developing their junior section and links with the local schools, and to increase their junior player capacity and coaching support. They are equally committed to develop their support for Derbyshire disabled cricket.
A Cash 4 Clubs sports grant of £500 was awarded to the club and will go towards helping the financing of rebuilding the club pavilion which was burnt down in 2007, as well as towards new coaching equipment. The new pavilion building work is expected to start this winter and will also accommodate the needs of the Derbyshire disabled players who were actively involved in the design and planning.
"We are delighted to receive this grant .It has given us a big boost .We are here to make cricket an exciting and rewarding activity for our young players and this money will help enormously. Many thanks to all involved in the Cash 4 clubs scheme ." David Jepson, Club Secretary.
